At the Heidelberg Christmas Market

It’s difficult to write an essay when you are constantly on the move, interacting with fellow travelers, giving talks, eating too many delicious meals, and just plain being absorbed in the magic of Christmas Markets along the Rhine River. But what about pulling out a phone and talking? Ahah, that I can always do!

So today, I want share with you some sights and sounds from Heidelberg’s Advent Market. Heidelberg? Wait, that’s not on the Rhine River. True enough, but on this Smithsonian Journey’s tour, we do disembark the ship and take busses short distances to places of interest like Heidelberg. In fact, crossing the hills from Mannheim to Heidelberg this morning, we finally got a little snow! It was indeed beautiful. Once we dropped back down into Heidelberg though, the grey rain returned. Still, nothing can dampen the fun of a Christmas Market!

  1. Thank you for sharing the Christmas Market! I almost teared up watching! We lived in Germany for a few years and attended a few markets each year. We visited Heidelberg castle once, also a grey day, and if I recall correctly it has a fantastic apothecary museum. I could have spent a whole day in it if I weren’t trying to corral my young children the entire time!
I’m so glad you’re getting to enjoy the markets this year. God bless!

  2. I was born in Heidelberg because my Dad was in the army and stationed there! I have been there once, when I was 11. I would so love to return and see the Advent market! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Good news! You CAN purchase the large lighted stars to take home and use in the U.S. We did. The booth simply asked us where we lived and gave us the properly compatible electric kit. They have so many US tourists purchasing in Germany that they have made sure to include electrical works that will function in North America.
    Buy a few!
