Getting Started

Well, the homeschool convention season is winding down.  I managed to attend several of these events around the country, from Virginia to California and places in between, and to speak with both parents and students about their educational goals.

Boy, did I get an earful!

It has been particularly interesting to see “the light go on” as parents thought about the importance of the arts in their child’s education.  Even more important is the realization that the arts are not a separate thing – something extracurricular or a frill – but the glue that can make political and cultural history so much more understandable and enjoyable.

Our inter-disciplinary approach – combining music with history, arts, and science – has generated some real excitement.

And we saw some wide-eyed adolescents who were clearly enthralled with the idea of discovering a whole new world of music and knowledge.

So for those of you with students who are ready for a serious look at history, don’t forget Discovering Music: 300 Years of Interaction in Western Music, Arts, History, and Culture.  We expect to ship the product very soon.

News about our “Circle of Scholars” will be coming out soon as well.  Amanda Marsrow, who made such a valuable contribution to the course book, just gave birth to her first child (Asher), and is now anxious to help me get the ball rolling.  We want your input, too!  Send me an email, and tell me how we can help you expose your student to the arts and make the study of history more than just memorizing dates and names.
