A building with a circular ground plan and often covered by a dome. It can also refer to a round room within a structure (e.g. the Rotunda in the U.S. Capitol). The rotunda had been used in Roman architecture and was used by Constantine for construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. It remained a popular form of architecture in churches through the Middle Ages.
