An Interview with Michael Dodds

Podcast: Music of the Spheres and Narnia

doddsYou may recognize Dr. Michael Dodds from our courses. He appears prominently in The History of Early Sacred Music and in Exploring America’s Musical Heritage.

Michael has been a colleague of mine for many years, beginning at Southern Methodist University where we had offices next door to one another. That relationship quickly expanded into a personal one involving his family and mine. We would regular get together for big family dinners on major holidays.

Michael is the author of From Modes to Keys in Early Modern Music Theory and The Organ in Baroque Liturgy, both forthcoming from Oxford University Press.

In this two-part podcast, we begin with a discussion of ancient and medieval concepts of music in relation to C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. The discussion focuses on Michael Ward’s book Planet Narnia and the medieval concept of Music of the Spheres.

Part Two ranges more broadly into Michael’s work as a composer and conductor.
